His run successfully drew the attention of defender Lisandro Martinez, allowing Haaland to score unmarked. Even though Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute, Manchester City, playing with ten men, held onto their advantage.

In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Martinez could not hide his disappointment and anger, and strongly questioned the referee's decision-making criteria: "Haaland was right there, but I had to dive for the man in front of me, which is why Haaland was completely out of the game at the far post."

"I'm in a two-choice situation. I have to defend the person in front of me first; if that person isn't there, I'll defend Haaland. It's that simple."
