In the 2026-27 Premier League season, Everton twice fell behind at home but twice equalized, ultimately securing a 2-2 draw against Manchester United thanks to a long-range shot by last-minute signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the 96th minute.
After the transfer deadline, Everton's squad depth was weakened, with only one true striker remaining, leading to widespread concerns that the team would fall into a slump. However, after this comeback victory against a strong opponent, manager David Moyes stated in a post-match interview that the entire team had already transformed their negative emotions into motivation.
Moyes made it clear: "I told the players that none of us can use this as an excuse, and the players all agree with that. Everyone highly values this attitude. While a shortage of players can certainly cause harm, it can also inspire the exact opposite kind of fighting spirit."
“Sometimes having fewer players means that everyone has to be ready to play at any time, and you have to find a way to get the whole team moving. Who knows what the future holds? But when facing two or even three games a week, things definitely become more difficult.”
Speaking of new signing Niles' stoppage-time goal and young winger George's brilliant performance, Moyes was full of praise: "Even if no one knew you before, a goal like that is enough to make headlines."
“This was an unparalleled goal, the technique was perfect. Although we haven’t had time to learn more about Ainsley yet, it was undoubtedly a fantastic start for him.”
