José Zar has signed a contract extension with Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending his contract until 2028.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially confirmed that goalkeeper José Za has signed a new contract that will run until the summer of 2028. The Portuguese international is currently in his sixth season at the Molineux Stadium. With his original contract entering its final year, Wolves chose to continue their partnership with the goalkeeper. The new contract gives Za the opportunity to further improve his playing time for Wolves; he has now made 174 appearances.  

José Za joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2021 and quickly demonstrated excellent form under Bruno Lager. In his first season with the team, he recorded 11 clean sheets and won recognition for his consistent and impressive performances, earning him the Player of the Season award voted by Wolves fans and teammates.  

Over the next two seasons, José Za maintained an exceptionally high attendance rate, rarely missing a match for the team. In February 2024, during Wolves' away game against Tottenham Hotspur, he wore the captain's armband for the first time under Gary O'Neill. Since then, José Za's influence within the team has further increased, and he has gradually become an important figure in the dressing room, taking on more and more captaincy responsibilities.  

Despite ongoing competition for the goalkeeper position at Wolves in recent years, José Za has earned the trust of the coaching staff through consistent performances and has maintained his starting position. Since Cesar Pesciotto took over the team, he has started in goal in the last few matches. In the recent game against Sheffield Wednesday, José Za again kept a clean sheet, marking his 41st clean sheet for Wolves.  

Wolves technical director Matt Jackson spoke highly of Jose Za's performance and role in the team, saying: "During his time with Wolves, Jose Za has fully demonstrated his ability and value. He not only possesses international-level ability but is also an indispensable member of the dressing room. He plays an important role both on the pitch and within the team, making him an extremely valuable player for the club."  

"When a player has only one year left on their contract, the external environment can indeed present some challenges. However, I don't think José Zar will be too affected. He has a very strong mentality and has accumulated a wealth of professional experience over the years, having faced all sorts of situations in the world of football. Nevertheless, he still deserves the recognition from the club. Signing him a new contract is not only an affirmation of his performance, but also gives him a more stable and secure future."

Now the team has three outstanding, professional goalkeepers who have proven themselves in professional matches.
