Chelsea, nicknamed the "Blues," defeated Luton Town 2-0 in the second round of the 2026/27 EFL Cup, thanks to a goal from Danny Welbeck and an own goal by an opposing player. Welbeck stated that he was very happy to score on his Chelsea debut, but believed that the team's advancement was more important.

Gusto delivered a cross in the 50th minute of the second half, and Welbeck headed the ball into the net, giving Chelsea a 1-0 lead.

In the 79th minute, Palmer made a long pass, Estewan Willian received it and broke into the penalty area to shoot, and then Luton defender Hakim Odofen inadvertently kicked the ball into his own goal, allowing Chelsea to extend their lead to 2-0.

Chelsea ultimately defeated Luton Town 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, advancing to the next round.

The 35-year-old Welbeck joined Chelsea earlier this month and signed a two-year contract.

"It's a great honor to play alongside these excellent players," Welbeck said in an interview. "It feels wonderful to be on the pitch."

“For me, playing the number 9 position in this game, it was even more important to stay near the last line of defense. When the ball came to my feet, I was ready to combine with players like Morgan Rodgers and Palmer. I really enjoyed the process and look forward to having more of these moments in the future.”

When discussing the goal, Welbeck said, "I think it takes a lot of patience. Dealing with a low-block defense is never easy, so you have to keep moving the ball around and looking for a way to break through. We had a few chances in the first half that could have led to the first goal, but we didn't manage to do it. At halftime, the team was instructed to get the ball into the box earlier and try to increase the crosses."
