NBA official: Pelicans sign free agent forward Trenton Watford to a one-year, $2.9 million contract.

The NBA officially confirmed on Monday that the New Orleans Pelicans have signed free agent forward Trenton Watford. According to a previous report by ESPN's Shams Charania, the two sides reached an agreement on a one-year, $2.9 million minimum salary contract.

Watford has been a free agent since the 76ers declined his team option in June. Despite in-depth negotiations with Spanish Basketball League powerhouse Valencia, he ultimately decided to remain in the NBA.

After joining the Pelicans, 25-year-old Watford will be entering his sixth NBA season. He is currently the Pelicans' 15th player with a standard contract, but it is unclear whether his salary is fully guaranteed.

As an undrafted free agent in 2021, Watford has played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Brooklyn Nets, and Philadelphia 76ers throughout his career. To date, he has played 270 regular season games, averaging 7.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 17.4 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 51.9% and a three-point percentage of 32.5%.

Watford also made his first playoff appearance with the 76ers last season, averaging 2.9 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game.

For the Pelicans, Watford is expected to serve as a backup in the frontcourt rotation. However, he could take on a more significant role should Zion Williamson or Derrick Quinn be sidelined with injuries, or a trade involving Herbert Jones or Trey Murphy occur.
