After being bought out by the Dallas Mavericks, 36-year-old four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson quickly signed with the Miami Heat to begin his 14th season in the NBA.
After the first day of the team's training camp, the veteran striker expressed his desire for a new beginning and his unwavering pursuit of his goals.
"I hope that one day in the future, when I look back, I can say that I gave it my all," Thompson said in an interview. "Coming to the Heat gave me that opportunity. They are completely focused on winning, and winning is more important than any of my personal stats. It feels very special to be a part of this team that is chasing a championship."
Even after achieving great success, Thompson maintains an extremely high level of performance. He is the only player in the league to have made at least 200 three-pointers in each of the past four consecutive seasons; his career total of three-pointers has now reached 2,899, just 74 away from Ray Allen, the former Heat legend who has risen to third place on the all-time three-point list, and only 101 away from crossing the 3,000-point mark.
Respect for historical records is one of his core driving forces. Thompson said, "I feel I can still contribute a lot to the sport before I enter the Hall of Fame."
“I’m a true basketball fanatic and I still crave to climb higher in the records. I grew up watching Ray Allen and Reggie Miller play, and now I have the opportunity to wear a Heat jersey and surpass Ray Allen, which gives me tremendous motivation.”
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra pointed out that Thompson's illustrious resume is highly respected in the Heat's locker room, and his experience and championship pedigree will be an important asset to the team.
In the new season, Thompson will take on a new role in Miami, creating space for the team while striving for a new milestone in his personal career.
