Shams: Knicks' contract extension negotiations with Towns have stalled.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, contract extension negotiations between the New York Knicks and Karl-Anthony Towns have stalled. Despite numerous discussions between the two sides during the offseason, no breakthrough has been achieved.

Charania further pointed out that the Knicks and Towns are unlikely to reach an agreement before training camp begins next week. Towns is now eligible to sign a maximum four-year, $276 million contract extension, but his demands are clearly unmet. Knicks owner James Dolan has previously made it clear that he does not want the team's total salary to exceed the second-highest salary threshold.

Karl-Anthony Towns, 30, is a 2.13-meter tall, 112-kilogram center who entered the NBA as the number one overall pick in 2015. He spent the first nine years of his professional career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, during which he played a total of 573 regular season games, averaging 22.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.

In October 2024, Towns was traded to the Knicks in a three-team deal. To date, he has played 147 regular season games for the Knicks, averaging 22.2 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 32.9 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 51.4% and a three-point percentage of 39.5%.

Towns also played 37 playoff games for the Knicks, averaging 18.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.0 blocks, and 1.0 steals in 32.9 minutes per game. In his first season with the Knicks, he reached the Eastern Conference Finals, and the following year he won the NBA championship with the team.
