Not wanting to stagnate, Ime Udoka is full of expectations for the Rockets' performance in the new season.

The Houston Rockets will begin their preseason next month to prepare for the 2026/27 NBA season. Ime Udoka stated at a press conference that he hopes the team will have an impact on the games and has high expectations for the players' performance.

In a key game of the 6th round of the 2025/26 NBA playoffs, the Houston Rockets, after scoring by Amen Thompson, Alperen Shinkyung, and Tali Ethan, ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Lakers 78-98 at home, ending their playoff run in the first round with a 2-4 series score.

Houston Rockets star Fred VanVleet suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during practice last September, causing him to miss the entire 2025/26 season. However, the shooting guard has made good progress in his recovery.

Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka said, "VanVleet has completed all his training and is cleared to fully recover, and he has been playing very well recently. We will certainly be cautious and handle this in a smarter way. Considering his health condition, we will not let him participate in consecutive games for the time being, but rather let him gradually recover his form."

"We were slightly lacking in technical ability and various aspects last season, and I think the offseason acquisitions can solve this problem, and the return of VanVleet is particularly significant. Stephen Adams' offensive intelligence is often underestimated, especially his screen setting ability, and he may be the best screener in the entire league."

Im Udoka pointed out, "With VanVleet and Stephen Adams, two of the most experienced and communicative players, back on the team, our communication on offense and defense, as well as our overall execution, will improve. Amen Thompson doesn't need to handle the ball every time; he certainly can, and he improved on that last season. But he can also play in other positions, such as setting screens, attacking the basket, and contributing to the offense in other areas."

"Our goal is not just to make it to the first round of the playoffs; we hope to make a real impact. I think everyone is even more eager to do that; nobody wants to stand still or reach their ceiling."

When discussing the need for players to take on more responsibility, Im Udoka said, "I do think pushing players to take on those roles will ultimately be very helpful for their careers. Just look at their current state; they are much more confident now than last year. So, there's a positive side to everything."

"Compared to before the start of last season, I am now much more excited for the new season. I feel I have a better understanding of the team and know what to expect from the players, which makes me very eager to see how the team performs."
