Bayer Leverkusen legend Peter Hermann passed away from ALS at the age of 74..

Bayer Leverkusen announced on their official website on Sunday that the club's legendary German attacking midfielder Peter Hermann has passed away from ALS at the age of 74.

According to the club's obituary, Hermann was not only a key figure who left an indelible mark on the team but also one of the most impressive assistant coaches in German football, his contributions to both the club and the sport will never be forgotten.

Bayer Leverkusen honorary captain Stefan Kießling wrote in his tribute: "Peter was always there to support me. I owe him so much. He was excellent at motivating people and frequently engaged in one-on-one conversations with players, as he possessed great tact and wisdom in his dealings with others."

Former Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes also wrote: "Peter was a man of immense talent and outstanding character. He was deeply empathetic and able to quickly connect with players and earn their trust, qualities that were absolutely crucial."

"We shared a wonderful rapport; he gave me tremendous support and played a pivotal role in the successes we achieved at both Leverkusen and Munich. Over the years, he became a close friend."

About Peter Hermann

Born on March 22, 1952, in Kleinmaischeid, Germany, Hermann was 1.74 meters tall. During his playing career, he primarily played as an attacking midfielder but was also capable of playing as a right winger.

As a player, Hermann played for clubs such as Engers, Koblenz, Hamburg, and Aachen, but he was best known for his time at Bayer Leverkusen, where he spent 12 years between 1976 and 1984. During this spell, he won the 2. Bundesliga title once with the team.

After retiring in the early 1990s, Hermann served as an assistant coach at Bayer Leverkusen for 19 years, also stepping in as interim head coach on several occasions.

In the summer of 2008, Hermann was appointed as an assistant coach at Nuremberg, but he returned to Bayer Leverkusen the following summer to serve as an assistant to Heynckes.

In the summer of 2011, Hermann followed Heynckes to Bayern Munich.

During this time, the duo achieved a quadruple of titles, winning the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, the DFL-Supercup, and the UEFA Champions League.

From the summer of 2013 through the first half of 2015, Hermann served as an assistant coach at Schalke and Hamburg, respectively.

In the summer of 2015, Hermann was appointed assistant coach at Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he also briefly served as interim head coach.

Concurrently, he held roles as Technical Director at Aachen and as an assistant coach for the Germany U18s national team.

From 2017 to 2019, Hermann returned to Bayern Munich to serve as an assistant coach under Niko Kovač.

In the summer of 2021, Hermann briefly returned to Schalke as an assistant coach.

The following summer, Hermann joined Borussia Dortmund to serve once again as an assistant coach under Kovač. This was the final coaching role of his life.
