Brandon Weems, a ten-year veteran of the Cavaliers, has been promoted to the new general manager.

The Cleveland Cavaliers officially announced on Friday the promotion of Brandon Weems to the team's new general manager, reporting to President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman.

Sonny Weems will replace Mike Gansey, who left in May to become president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers. The 40-year-old Weems has played for the Cavaliers for over a decade, rising through the ranks from scouting and personnel to assistant general manager since 2022.

In an official statement, Altman said that Weems earned the position based on his long-standing outstanding contributions, professional competence, and excellent judgment, playing an indispensable role in the team's player evaluation, roster building, and cultural development. Prior to joining the NBA's management, Weems coached at Oakland University, Drexel University, and the University of Kentucky.

It's worth noting that Sonny Weems is LeBron James' childhood friend and high school teammate. James' agent, Rich Paul, revealed this summer that Weems' presence gave the Cavaliers an advantage in recruiting James during the offseason, although James ultimately chose to sign with the 76ers. After the appointment was announced, James immediately congratulated his friend on social media.

In addition, the Cavaliers management announced on the same day that former NBA player Jose Calderon, who has served as a special advisor since 2022, has been promoted to assistant general manager, further strengthening the team's logistics decision-making team.
