Osar Thompson signs 5-year, $155 million contract extension with Pistons

September 19th - According to ESPN , the Detroit Pistons have reached a contract extension agreement with forward Osar Thompson . The two sides will sign him to a five-year, $ 155 million fully guaranteed rookie contract.

Last season, Thompson was named to the All-Defensive First Team and finished third in the Defensive Player of the Year voting . In the 2025-26 season, he averaged 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 0.9 blocks per game, leading the league in steals with 2.0 per game . He completed a total of 215 steals and blocks throughout the season, ranking third in the league .

Thompson was the 5th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft . During the playoffs, he played 14 games for the Pistons, averaging 8.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game. In the Pistons' run to the Eastern Conference Semifinals, he became the first player since Anthony Davis in 2020 to record at least 25 steals and 25 blocks in a single playoff season .

Thompson's sophomore season was cut short in March 2024 after he was diagnosed with a blood clot. Eight months later, he passed an NBA fitness assessment and was cleared to return to the court.
