Hamburg coach Vanderlei Porzing has extended his contract, meaning his term will last until 2029.

Hamburg announced on Friday that they have extended the contract of head coach Mehring Porzing. According to Sky Sports Germany, Porzing will remain in his position until the end of the 2028/29 season.

Besides Porzingis, his assistant coaches Loik Favre, Richard Krohn, and Max Bergmann have all extended their contracts until 2029. This means Hamburg will continue to trust its existing coaching staff, despite their current bottom-of-the-table position in the Bundesliga after three losses.

Following the contract extension, Hamburg Sport's board member, Katherine Kluge, explained: "From the outset, we have made our fundamental commitment to the coaching team clear and have repeatedly reaffirmed it. We will move forward together while maintaining a clear understanding of the current competitive situation. Trust does not mean that results become secondary; on the contrary, it is built on careful reflection and discussion."

"With complete confidence, we have decided to extend the contracts of Merlin, Loick, Richie, and Max. They have earned everyone's recognition through their professionalism, rigorous attitude, diligent work style, and enthusiasm day after day."

Hamburg Sporting Director Klaus Costa added: “I am impressed by our coaching team both professionally and personally. Throughout our journey so far, we have always communicated with each other in an open, critical, and honest manner, and as a result, we have overcome many difficult challenges together. Over the years, I have had the privilege of getting to know Merlin’s day-to-day work and witnessing his growth as a leader. I particularly admire his big-picture perspective and his unwavering belief in working together with his colleagues to make progress.”

A native of Hamburg, the 35-year-old Porzing has worked at the club since 2011. He has served under several Hamburg managers, including Tim Walter, Daniel Cuné, and Steffen Baumgart, and has been in charge of the first team since November 2024.

To date, Porzingis's record as manager of Hamburg is 23 wins, 18 draws, and 22 losses. He was not only a key contributor to Hamburg's return to the Bundesliga, but also played a crucial role in the team's relegation battle last season.

Regarding the contract extension, Porzing stated clearly: "Our shared commitment is a testament to our trust. At the same time, I see it as a significant responsibility and a mission to make the club better. Everyone knows what this city, this club, and this stadium mean to me. That's why I'm especially happy to continue working alongside the coaching and support staff, and I deeply appreciate the tremendous support from the club's employees, fans, and the Hamburg family."
