Former NBA player Michael Sweetney has died at the age of 43.

September 18th - According to the Associated Press, former NBA player Michael Sweetney passed away on Wednesday at the age of 43. Sweetney died at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey on Wednesday. The cause of death has not yet been released. The Knicks, Bulls, and Georgetown University subsequently posted messages of condolence on social media.

Sweetney was selected 9th overall in the first round of the 2003 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. He played for the Knicks from 2003 to 2005 , and then for the Chicago Bulls from 2005 to 2007. His NBA career lasted four seasons, during which he played 233 games, starting 73 of them , averaging 6.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 15.5 minutes per game.

Before entering the NBA , Sweetney played for Georgetown University, where he averaged a double-double in his last two college seasons. In the 2001-02 season, he averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds; in the 2002-03 season, he averaged 22.8 points and 10.4 rebounds.

Sweetney currently ranks fifth on Georgetown University's all-time rebounding list ( 887 ), seventh on the all-time blocking list ( 180 ), and ninth on the all-time scoring list ( 1750 points). After retiring, he served as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team at Yeshiva University in New York.
