Following Newcastle United's humiliating 1-4 defeat to Leeds United, manager Matthias Jaissle reported a very serious injury after the match.
Jaissler first explained the unexpected substitution during the match. Midfielder Nico González was forced off the field after triggering a concussion protocol following a collision, but Jacob Ramsey, who had been registered earlier, was unable to come on as a substitute, ultimately forcing the introduction of 18-year-old Shane Stoll.
In a post-match interview, Jaisl revealed that Ramsey had strained his thigh muscle during pre-match warm-up: "Ramsey felt discomfort in his thigh during warm-up and was completely unable to play. This became another problem for us; a lot of bad things just happened tonight."
When asked about his decision to decisively substitute Gonzalez, Jaissle emphasized that player safety is always more important than winning or losing the game: "As the manager and the club, we must take responsibility for protecting our players."
"Everyone saw his dizziness after the impact. Even though he seemed fine afterwards, there's no room for complacency when it comes to concussion rules. No matter how crucial he is or how important winning is, health comes first. We must take this seriously and substitute him immediately."
To make matters worse, the team's attacker, Anthony Elanga, also suffered a serious injury and missed this match. When asked if the injured player could make it to the weekend's game against Hull City, Jaissler bluntly stated that the situation was not optimistic: "Elanga's injury needs further examination to confirm its severity, but at the moment it does not look good."
