Borussia Mönchengladbach manager Roman Polanski was officially sacked after three consecutive Bundesliga defeats at the start of the season.

Borussia Mönchengladbach announced on Sunday the immediate dismissal of Eugene Polanski as head coach. With Polanski's departure, his assistant coach Tobias Trulsen will also leave the club.

Borussia Mönchengladbach has not yet announced Polanski's successor. They have decided that first-team assistant coach Jan-Moritz Licht will temporarily take charge, with Marcus Gellhaus and the rest of the coaching staff providing assistance.

The 40-year-old Polanski is from Poland and played for Borussia Mönchengladbach for 14 years during his playing career. After returning to Mönchengladbach in July 2019, he gained extensive management experience as a scout, U17 and reserve team coach.

In September 2025, Polanski temporarily took over the first team after Gerardo Sevane resigned. He then led Borussia Mönchengladbach to safety with a record of 10 wins, 10 draws and 13 losses, and was officially appointed as the permanent manager in November of the same year.

However, Borussia Mönchengladbach's start to the season has been less than ideal. After suffering three consecutive defeats and conceding 12 goals, they are currently second to last in the Bundesliga standings.

Regarding the decision to dismiss Polanski, Borussia Mönchengladbach's sporting director, Ruben Schröder, explained: "Despite excellent preseason preparations and some encouraging signs, Mönchengladbach failed to achieve the results we expected in the Bundesliga. The team's recent performance ultimately led us to believe that adjustments were necessary. Therefore, we decided to immediately dismiss Eugene. Eugene is a true Mönchengladbach native. We must thank him and Tobias Trulsen for everything they have done for the club."

Polanski stated, "Borussia Mönchengladbach has always been my club and always will be. That's why it's so painful for me to see things end this way. After successfully avoiding relegation last season, we made a series of adjustments in preparation for this season. We had grand plans, but ultimately failed to realize them. I deeply regret this. I sincerely hope that Mönchengladbach can turn things around as soon as possible. I sincerely wish the club, the team, and all the wonderful fans all the best. Thank you for all the time we've spent together."
