The NBA has raised its 2027-28 salary cap projection to $176 million.

A month before the start of the 80th season (2026-27 season), the NBA officially announced a financial benefit for all 30 teams in the league.

According to media reports, the league office has informed all teams of the latest salary cap projections for the 2027-28 season, with all key financial indicators exceeding previous expectations.

Latest data shows that the salary cap for the 2027-28 season is projected to reach $176 million, with the luxury tax threshold set at $213 million. This projection is $2 million higher than the league's previous estimate of $174 million.

With the baseline being raised, the first-tier luxury line for this season is expected to be around $223 million, while the second-tier luxury line, with its strict limits, is around $236.5 million.

In comparison, the current salary cap for the 2026-27 season is $164.9 million, the luxury tax threshold is $200.4 million, and the first and second highest salary caps are $209 million and $221.6 million, respectively. The new plan indicates that teams' salary cap and operating budgets will steadily increase in future seasons.

The projected $2 million increase won't be a direct cash handout to teams, but it will have a ripple effect on salary structures. Many players' long-term maximum contracts or extensions are proportionally linked to the total salary cap, and this adjustment will lead to a slight increase in players' real salaries in the future.

Amidst various external commentary, this positive development once again reflects the continued expansion of the NBA's commercial profitability and provides teams with more room to maneuver in long-term roster restructuring.
