1. Bob Cousy ( 6945 assists )

Bob Cousy joined Boston after only four seasons with the team and went on to build a Hall of Fame-caliber career over the next 13 years. During this time, he helped the team win six NBA championships , was selected to the All-Star team 13 times, and won one regular season MVP award . Cousy averaged 4.9 assists per game in his rookie season of 1950-51 . From his third season onward, he maintained an assist average between 7.1 and 9.5 per game for ten consecutive years .

2. John Havlicek ( 6114 assists )

John Havlicek was selected 7th overall in the 1962 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, helping Boston win its eighth NBA championship. A 13- time All-Star and four- time All-NBA First Team selection, Havlicek averaged 2.2 to 3.4 assists per game in his first five seasons , followed by six consecutive seasons averaging 5.4 to 7.5 assists per game, and still managing 5.1 assists per game in the 1976-77 season .

3. Larry Bird ( 5695 assists )

In his first six seasons, Larry Bird averaged a double-double every season, including five seasons where he averaged over 5.5 assists per game. In the 1986-87 season, Bird averaged a career-high 7.6 assists per game, and he also averaged over 7 assists per game in two subsequent seasons .

4. Rajon Rondo ( 4474 assists )

Rajon Rondo joined the Boston Celtics in a trade to the Phoenix Suns on draft day in 2006 and spent the first eight- plus seasons of his professional career in Boston. Before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks midway through the 2014-15 season, Rondo averaged 8.2 to 11.7 assists per game in his final six- plus seasons with the Celtics , ultimately ranking fourth in franchise history with 4,474 assists.

5. Paul Pierce ( 4305 assists )

Paul Pierce was selected 10th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1998 NBA Draft . Pierce averaged over 21 points per game for seven consecutive seasons and 4.1 or more assists per game for six consecutive seasons. He averaged 4.5 and 4.8 assists per game in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, respectively .
