Sports or esports open tournaments usually start with the top 16 teams, with each region holding its own offline qualifiers. For some unknown reason, BLAST announced that it would reduce the number of participating teams to eight.

This isn't too disappointing. Although the rules will be updated, the Open Series will retain the original 16 teams, with the group stage using a double-elimination format and the knockout stage using a single-elimination format. The scale will remain unchanged, and the prize pool will be $1.25 million. The Confrontation Series will have the same prize pool and the same rules, except that the number of teams will be changed to eight.

It sounds like the impact won't be significant. The new rules will be implemented starting in the 2027 season, with Malta kicking off the season from January 11th to 24th, followed by Singapore from March 15th to 28th, and the Rio de Janeiro leg from October 4th to 17th.
