Evi, Japanese ace top laner formerly of DetonatioN FocusMe (DFM), has officially announced his retirement on Sunday via his personal X (Twitter) account, bringing a close to a 11-year professional League of Legends e-sports player career.

In his retirement statement, Evi hinted that while his time as a professional player has ended, his relationship with the League of Legends esports scene has not; instead, he hopes to contribute to the industry in a "different capacity," implying he is open to pursuing roles in coaching or management.

Evi’s career is a story of resilience and courage; he proved himself to be a player who never gave up easily. He could even be described as a stalwart figure who endured across multiple eras, serving as a key driving force in the advancement of Japanese esports.

A legend alongside teammates like ADC Yutapon and mid-laner Ceros, the 30-year-old frequently graced the stages of top-tier tournaments, representing his country before millions of viewers.

Whether competing for DetonatioN FocusMe (DFM) or Fukuoka SoftBank HAWKS gaming (SHG), he consistently posed the kind of unpredictable threat often associated with "Wildcard" regions, frequently snatching victory when opponents least expected it.

Evi’s career extended well beyond Japan; the top laner was a regular presence on the international stage. Over the years, he represented the LJL in multiple Worlds Championship and Mid-Season Invitationals (MSI), competing against the world's elite teams and players.

Although the Japanese region was often viewed as the underdog against major regions, Evi and his teams consistently demonstrated fierce competitiveness on the international stage, creating many memorable moments.

He reached a career pinnacle and made history in 2023 by joining the LEC's Team Heretics, becoming the first—and to date, only—Japanese player to be recruited by a major region.

During his tenure there, he helped Heretics secure a fourth-place finish in the Summer Playoffs. Although his stint in the LEC lasted only a single season, it marked a significant highlight in his long professional career.

After concluding his year in the LEC, Evi returned to Japan to join Fukuoka SoftBank HAWKS gaming (SHG), where he played for three years.

However, his performance after returning to the region failed to match the heights of his earlier career. Despite competing in the 2024 Worlds Championship, he was unable to recapture his past glory following the subsequent formation of the LCP (a league merging the Vietnam and Taiwan regions).

Since the merger, Japanese teams have struggled against the region's strongest opponents, with the league landscape dominated primarily by teams from Vietnam and Taiwan.

This year, Evi’s team finished at the bottom of the standings in the third season, bringing their campaign to a close.

While Evi did not explicitly link his retirement decision to these recent struggles, the contrast between his years of past success in the Japanese region and the difficult circumstances marking the end of his career may well have played a role in his decision to step away from professional play.
