Newly promoted Coventry City lost 0-1 to Manchester City in the third round of the 2026/27 Premier League season, after conceding a goal in the first half to Haaland. Lampard stated that he did not believe Coventry would lose the game and insisted that his team deserved at least a point.
In the 26th minute, Semenho delivered a cross from the right wing, and Haaland headed the ball into the net, giving Manchester City a 1-0 lead.
In the 58th minute of the second half, Enzo passed the ball back from the penalty area to the front of the goal, and Haaland stepped up and pushed the ball into the net. However, Enzo was offside before the goal, so the goal was disallowed.
Coventry City ultimately lost 0-1 to Manchester City, managed by Maresca, at the Etihad Stadium. After three consecutive defeats, Coventry currently sits in 20th place in the standings, with a long road ahead in their fight to avoid relegation.
Coventry manager Frank Lampard said, "I don't think we should have lost the game. We played better and better as the game went on. Manchester City certainly created some chances, but our players performed exceptionally well. I'm disappointed because we didn't get the result we deserved, at least a point."
"On paper, we have faced two very strong teams in a row, and all we can do is control our performance. Our players are constantly improving in the game, and the pressure we put on in the second half was much better than it was two weeks ago against Arsenal."
Lampard noted, "Ethan Pinnock played brilliantly after coming on, and we didn't have many moments where we really needed to feel nervous. I'm really happy for our players, and the fans showed their appreciation for the team's performance through their reactions."
“We should learn a lot from these three games. What will really determine our season results will be games like the one against Hull City. The result of that game was also disappointing, but we still have many games to play.”
