Manchester City attacker Echeverri has joined Benfica on loan, with an option to buy.

Benfica announced in a statement that they have reached an agreement with Manchester City to loan Claudio Echeverri. Echeverri will play for Benfica until the end of the 2026/27 season, with an option to buy worth €21 million included in the contract.

The official announcement also confirmed that Echeverri will inherit the number 30 jersey left by Nicolás Otamendi at Benfica. His salary in the Portuguese league will reportedly be fully covered by Benfica.

Echeverri, only 20 years old, is considered an outstanding representative of Argentina's new generation of attackers. He came through River Plate's youth academy and officially transferred to Manchester City in January 2025.

However, Echeverri's development at Manchester City was less than satisfactory. He only made 3 appearances for Manchester City before being loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen and Girona for further experience.

After completing the signing, Echeverri stated through official channels: "When I learned that I would be joining Benfica, I was very happy, even a little excited. I will be joining a very great club. Many players have achieved success at Benfica, including several fellow Argentinians. I hope to follow in their footsteps and contribute to Benfica."
