Official: Amen Thompson signs 5-year, $208 million max contract extension with Rockets

The Houston Rockets announced on Thursday that they have finalized a contract extension with Amen Thompson. The two sides reached a five-year, $208 million rookie extension agreement, which includes a 10% trade bonus clause.

According to Warren Shankal of the Houston Chronicle, Amen's new agreement does not include a team option or player option. The contract will take effect next summer and last until the end of the 2031/32 season.

As the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, Amen is the second player from his draft class to receive a rookie contract extension. Before him, only Victor Wahlbanama had signed a five-year, $252 million max contract with the San Antonio Spurs.

The Rockets' willingness to invest heavily in his future stems from Amen's visible progress and increasingly versatile performance on the court. During his time with the Rockets, he has gradually developed into one of the most complete forwards and guards in the league. To date, he has played 210 regular season games, averaging 7.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.4 steals in 31.3 minutes per game, and has been selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team once.

Amen also played 13 times in the playoffs, averaging 17.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.8 steals in 38.1 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 49.1% and a three-point percentage of 25.0%.

Regarding the contract extension, Rockets General Manager Rafael Stone stated in an official announcement: "Amen embodies everything our team seeks. He is outstanding on both ends of the court, possesses a tenacious will and a fighting spirit that surpasses his peers, and gives his all in any situation. Year after year, he has improved in every aspect of his game. We believe he can deliver even better performances in the future."
