Four years later, 39-year-old England goalkeeper John Rudy has returned to Molineux. Wolves have officially confirmed that the experienced goalkeeper has signed a one-year contract with the club, marking the start of his second stint with the club.
John Rudy previously played for Wolves for five seasons, playing a key role in the team's promotion to the Premier League. Now returning to Molineux, he will bring his years of professional experience and deep understanding of English football to Cesar Peschoto's goalkeeping team, providing reliable support and adding more experience.
John Rudy joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017 and gradually became a key figure in the team's goalkeeping position under Nuno Espirito Santo. In the season when Wolves won the Championship title, he demonstrated excellent consistency, keeping 24 clean sheets in a single season, winning the Championship Golden Glove award, and being selected for the Team of the Season.
One of the most iconic moments of their promotion journey occurred in Cardiff. Against Cardiff City, John Rudy made a crucial save in stoppage time, denying a penalty. This heroics not only helped Wolves maintain their lead but also brought the team one step closer to the Championship title and a return to the Premier League.
After Wolves' promotion to the Premier League, John Rudy gradually became a backup goalkeeper, but he served as an important substitute behind Rui Patricio and Jose Za. Despite reduced playing time, he continued to play a vital role in the team's dressing room, providing assistance to his teammates with his rich professional experience and maintaining high standards in daily training, thus driving the goalkeeping team to continuously improve its competitiveness.
After his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers, John Rudy continued his career in the Championship, playing for Birmingham City and gradually becoming a key member of the team. During his time there, he made 87 appearances and was named Player of the Season in 2023. He then joined Newcastle United for two seasons, winning the League Cup with the club.
Cesar Peschoto welcomed John Rudy's return to Wolves, saying: "It's very important for a team to have experienced players. John Rudy has a deep understanding of the club, and Wolves feels like home to him. Therefore, I believe his value will not only be reflected in the game, but he can also play an important role in the dressing room and help maintain a good atmosphere in the team."
“John Rudy has played in a lot of matches and witnessed Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League, so he has a very deep understanding of the Championship and English football. A long season requires the goalkeepers to maintain a high standard of performance, so it is crucial for them to maintain a good relationship. Regardless of who gets the opportunity to play, everyone’s ultimate goal is the same: to contribute to the team and the club.”
Wolves technical director Matt Jackson believes John Rudy's return will have a multifaceted positive impact on the club. He stated, "John Rudy's arrival is a very important reinforcement for us. It's usually difficult for a new player to have an impact on multiple levels of the club simultaneously, but we believe John Rudy has that ability."
“We know John Rudy very well, both in terms of his personal qualities and his ability as a player, and we know what he can bring to the team. He can not only help improve the entire goalkeeping team with his own technical level, but he is also still an excellent goalkeeper who can provide support to the team on the competitive level.”
Returning to Wolves after four years, John Rudy admitted this opportunity holds special significance for him. He accepted the offer from his former club with little hesitation and hopes to use his years of Championship experience to help the team in their push for promotion. He said, “I’m really happy. This summer has been a bit long for me, with a longer break than originally planned. But when I learned I had the chance to come back here, I had almost no reason to refuse. It’s an opportunity I’ve been really looking forward to.”
“It feels great to see so many familiar faces again. Although four years have passed, it still feels very familiar and hasn’t changed much. It’s a rare opportunity for me to return to this club, and I can’t wait to start a new phase. I’m also very much looking forward to what will happen next this season.”
“The club has spoken with me about the responsibilities they expect of me, and I will give my all whatever the team needs me to do. Whether in matches, training, or in the locker room, I want to integrate into the team and make a difference. Although I am no longer a young player, I still believe I can contribute a lot to the team. My physical condition is currently very good, and I believe I can continue to contribute within the team and in other areas.”
Speaking about his extensive Championship promotion experience, John Rudy said: "I've been very lucky to have been promoted from the Championship three times in my career. I won the Championship with Wolves, I was promoted to the Premier League with Norwich City through the promotion play-offs, and I was promoted directly to the Premier League as runners-up in the league."
“I have indeed gained a lot of experience in this area, but I am very aware of how tough the Championship is. We currently have a very strong and talented team. However, to succeed in the Championship, in addition to individual ability, it is necessary to maintain a stable and consistent performance throughout the season. I hope to pass on the experience I have accumulated in the past to my teammates, so that everyone can better understand how to cope with the challenges of a long season.”
"The Championship is always a challenging competition. There are many strong teams in the league this year, so the road to promotion can sometimes seem smooth, but it can also suddenly become very difficult at some point. I think this season is destined to be tough because the overall level of competition is very high. Now that there are more spots in the promotion play-offs, it does add some new excitement to the league . But frankly, I personally don't particularly like this arrangement."
"In any case, our goal is very clear: to finish in the top two of the league. We believe the team has the ability to achieve this goal, so we need to prove ourselves with our performance throughout the season. If we ultimately fail to achieve this goal, we will all be disappointed."
