Leicester City have announced the signing of Ilary Kangasnemi on a five-year contract.

Leicester City have officially announced the signing of 19-year-old centre-back Ilari Kangasnemi from Finnish top-flight club Internacional Turku. The transfer is still subject to league and FIFA registration procedures. The player has signed a five-year contract with Leicester City. The 1.98-meter tall Kangasnemi will join the team and participate in training after the signing, preparing for the second league match of the season away against MK Towns.  

Born in Seinäjoki, Finland, Ilari Kangasniemi received his early football training at the local team Sepsi-78 before joining the SJK Seinäjoki youth academy, where he gradually developed his skills. In January 2024, he experienced a significant turning point in his career, joining Italian powerhouse Inter Milan. During his time at Inter Milan, Kangasniemi represented the club at various age levels, including the U19 team, and participated in the UEFA Youth League.  

In August 2025, Ilari Kangasnemi ended his overseas stint and returned to Finland to join Internacional Turku, gradually gaining consistent playing time in the first team. During his time there, he not only accumulated experience in the Finnish Premier League but also represented the team in UEFA competitions. In 2026, Kangasnemi helped the team win the Finnish League Cup and scored his first Finnish Premier League goal in April against Ilvez, securing a last-minute victory.  

In terms of national team experience, Ilari Kangasniemi has been selected for the Finnish U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 youth national teams, representing each level in matches. In June 2026, he made his debut for the Finnish U21 national team in a match against Sweden, further accumulating international experience.  

With his excellent physical attributes and the youth academy experience he gained at Inter Milan, Ilary Kangasniemi possesses considerable potential. Joining Leicester City will mark his first appearance in English football. The club has high hopes for the young center-back, aiming to nurture him through continuous development and high-level matches, allowing him to gradually adapt to English football and ultimately become a key player in the defensive system.  

Speaking about his decision to join Leicester City, Ilary Kangasniemi expressed his excitement, saying, "I'm very excited to be at Leicester City and I'm looking forward to being involved in the team's overall plans. After speaking with the manager, I'm even more convinced that this is the right place for me. He has a wealth of experience in helping young players develop, which is one of the key reasons that attracted me."

Ilari Kangasniemi, speaking about his experience in Italy, said: “That time was very valuable for me; I learned a lot there. I grew significantly both in life and in football, especially in my understanding and ball handling as a defender. The pace of the game and the physicality are more intense than in Finland, but I have played in some European competitions before, so it's not my first time facing such high-intensity matches. I believe that the experience I have gained in the past will help me adapt quickly.”  

“I’m really looking forward to the upcoming games and hope they can start as soon as possible. My most important goal this season is to get playing time and contribute to the team. No matter how much playing time I get, I will give it my all and show my best on the court.”
