Xabi Alonso emphasizes that Chelsea will field their most competitive lineup against Luton, prioritizing all competitions.

Another crucial match in the second round of the 2026/27 EFL Cup will take place, with Chelsea hosting Luton Town at Stamford Bridge. Xabi Alonso has stated that his team takes all competitions very seriously and will field their best lineup against Luton.

In the earlier Premier League opener, Chelsea defeated Fulham 3-2 with goals from João Pedro, Morgan Rodgers and Palmer, successfully starting the new season with a victory.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said, "We know we have enough time to deal with all the competitions this season, so every cup and every game is very important."

“We hope to field our most competitive squad against Luton, while giving them the respect they deserve. Luton will be our first opponent in the English League Cup this season.”

Xabi Alonso stated, "The most important thing is the players' abilities and their ability to adapt to the game. At the same time, we also need to ensure the synergy between them and their teammates to make the whole team better. This has always been my top priority—to improve the team as a whole by understanding the individual characteristics of each player."

Regarding whether there was any special discussion with Roberto Sanchez regarding the selection of the goalkeeper, Xabi Alonso said, "It was just a normal discussion. We talked more about team-level matters, such as what we did well and what we need to improve. Our focus was more on understanding the situation of the game."

“Every game is important because we are currently in a process of continuous development and integration. We need to make constant adjustments and focus more on the team itself.”

When discussing the current squad situation, Xabi Alonso said, "Both Caicedo and Palestella are unavailable for the match against Luton. Hopefully, Caicedo will be fit for the weekend's game, but we need to observe Palestella's situation further."

"Apart from that, all the other players from the last game are fine, and Palmer is also in good condition. Goalkeeper Mike Penders is part of the squad, so he has a chance to play, and we will make a decision later. However, I will only tell the players the starting lineup tomorrow, so I would prefer that they know my arrangements first."

"And Enzo, we expect him to play. He trains very well and is a professional player, so he will be in the team's lineup."
