Toda Ekert: We must learn to persevere in adversity and make the team more resilient.

Southampton manager Toda Ekert said the team needs to show more resilience and the ability to handle pressure in matches. Following their 1-4 home defeat to West Ham United in the second round of the League Cup, he hopes the players can adjust their form quickly and respond as soon as possible in the upcoming games.  

Southampton displayed a positive attitude from the start, with Leo Sinsheen scoring early to break the deadlock. Southampton maintained good intensity in the first half, but 19-year-old Josh Ajala equalized before halftime and then scored again early in the second half to take the lead. Substitutes Tati Castellanos and Jarrod Bowen subsequently added goals, securing a 4-1 victory for West Ham United.  

After the match, Toda Ekert praised the team's performance in the first half, but also pointed out that Southampton failed to make timely adjustments after the game situation changed, ultimately leading to a heavy defeat. He said, "I think we started quite well, and played very well overall in the first half. We had a chance to extend our lead to 2-0, but around the 40th minute, we made a mistake defending a corner kick and conceded a goal. From then on, we were unable to regain control of the game."  

Toda Ekert admitted that Southampton still has many problems to solve, with maintaining stability in crucial stages of the game being particularly important. He said, "We know very well that the team has a lot of work to do, and this has been clearly exposed in recent games. Of course, we can still find some positives in the games, but in any case, conceding four goals in a single game is obviously unacceptable."  

“From an overall tactical perspective, we performed well, especially in the first half. However, we were not resilient enough in some decisive moments. We cannot be in control in every game or at every time, so we must learn to persevere in adverse situations and make the team more tenacious.”  

Looking ahead to the upcoming schedule, Toda Ekert hopes Southampton can quickly adjust their form and show a more positive attitude in Saturday's match. He added, "Saturday is our chance to prove ourselves. It will be a very important game, and we must be fully prepared and respond to the last defeat with concrete actions."
