Championship side Middlesbrough officially announced the signing of Leeds United defender Byram.

Championship side Middlesbrough have officially announced the signing of 32-year-old English defender Sam Byram, who left Leeds United on a free transfer.

This veteran defender, with extensive experience in both the Premier League and the Championship, will further strengthen Middlesbrough's squad depth at full-back for the 2026-27 season.

Byram began his professional career at Leeds United’s youth academy and later played for West Ham United and Norwich City, among other clubs, making over 300 appearances in the English top and second divisions.

In the 2024-25 season, Byram made 36 appearances as a key rotation player, helping Leeds United win the Championship title with a record 100 points and return to the Premier League. His arrival not only provided Middlesbrough manager Kim Helberg with flexible options on both flanks, but also injected mature leadership into the team's dressing room.

After completing the signing, Byram expressed his anticipation for the new journey in an interview with Middlesbrough's official website: "I am very excited to be here. I have played against Middlesbrough many times over the years, I know this club very well, and I am happy to be a part of this great team."

Speaking about the Championship competition in the new season, Byram, who has multiple promotion experiences, said: "I have played in this level of league for many years and have experienced several successful promotions. I know what kind of effort is required to get promoted."

"The Championship is a long and extremely competitive league, but we have a very good squad. If I can bring experience and immediate impact to the team, that's my goal in coming here."
