In the opening match of the new Premier League season, Chelsea defeated their West London rivals Fulham 3-2 away from home, securing a winning start for manager Xabi Alonso's Chelsea debut.
Just 32 seconds into the game, Cole Palmer delivered a brilliant pass, assisting João Pedro to quickly open the scoring. Although Fulham later equalized through Josh King, new signing Morgan Rodgers, making his debut for Chelsea, scored before halftime to help them regain the lead.
After the break, Palmer continued his dominance and extended Chelsea's lead; even though Fulham pulled one back, Chelsea held on to their lead until the final whistle.
In the post-match press conference, head coach Alonso highly praised the team's tactical execution and resilience under pressure: "Winning any Premier League game away from home is never easy. We were prepared for high-intensity competition, and it was a very professional, solid, and mature performance."
"During that difficult period after the opponent equalized, we made some mistakes in our pressing timing, but the whole team quickly made adjustments. In the second half, we played very freely off the ball and firmly controlled the rhythm of the game."
In light of the intense competition in the Premier League, Alonso emphasized the importance of mental management: "The charm of the Premier League lies in the fact that the game can slip out of your control at any moment, so it is just as important for players to maintain emotional composure and know how to cope in adversity as it is for the right tactics. We handled this very well today."
After the match, Alonso led the team to the away stands to thank the fans, saying, "Seeing the fans' happy smiles is very important; it establishes a good emotional bond for the new season. Although it was only the first game, it was certainly a good start."
