The Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings announced today that both teams will wear memorial black belts on their jerseys throughout the 2026-27 season in memory of Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Adelman, who passed away on June 1st at the age of 79.
Adelman left a very deep mark on the history of both teams. As a player, he was a founding member of the Trail Blazers and played for the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, the predecessor to the Kings, in the mid-1970s.
After transitioning to coaching, Adelman led the Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals twice, in 1990 and 1992. During his tenure as head coach of the Sacramento Kings, he led the team to an impressive eight-year playoff run and holds the Kings' all-time record for most wins with 395 regular season victories.
Sacramento Kings Chief Operating Officer Matina Kolokotronis said, "Adelman's impact on our team has extended far beyond the basketball court, and wearing this commemorative ribbon is the best way to pay tribute to his extraordinary legacy."
Portland Trail Blazers President of Business Operations Dewayne Hankins also pointed out that Adelman's impact on the team is profound and lasting. The two teams will not only pay tribute throughout the season with their jerseys, but also plan to hold a special commemorative event when they face off on December 15th, jointly reflecting on Adelman's career as a decorated coach and outstanding leader.
