Bruno Fernandes believes Manchester United's attacking prowess was insufficient after their shock defeat to newly promoted Hull City.

Manchester United, nicknamed the "Red Devils," suffered a 0-2 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their opening Premier League match of the 2026/27 season, after conceding two goals in the first half and failing to change the score in the second half. Bruno Fernandes stated that the team needs to make many changes, especially in their lack of decisiveness in attack.

Hull City took a corner in the 17th minute. McBurnie's shot was saved by Manchester United goalkeeper Lamens, but Semi Ajay followed up and scored, giving Hull City a 1-0 lead.

In the 38th minute, Reagan Slater took a free kick, and Nobel Mendy headed the ball into the net, extending Hull City's lead to 2-0.

Manchester United were unable to change the score in the remaining time, and Carrick's team ultimately suffered a shock 0-2 defeat to Hull City away from home.

In the next round of the Premier League, Manchester United will host another newly promoted team, Ipswich Town, at Old Trafford.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said: "The first home game will be very important for us, especially after we failed to take a win away from Hull City. So we are three points behind our original plan, and we really need to make a difference in the next game."

“We know that many teams consider set pieces one of their strengths, and I think we were fully aware of that. But ultimately, we still conceded a goal again.”

Bruno Fernandes added, "We had a lot of possession, but lacked decisiveness in attack. Especially in the final attacking third, we needed to be more determined in creating chances and scoring. However, we must also acknowledge our opponents' performance; their defense in the penalty area was truly excellent."
