Thompson has reached a buyout agreement with the Mavericks and will next join the Heat.

The Dallas Mavericks announced Friday that they have reached a buyout agreement with five-time All-Star guard Klay Thompson. Thompson is expected to join the Miami Heat after a 48-hour waiver period.

ESPN's Shams Charania further points out that Thompson has finalized a two-year, $13 million contract with the Heat, including a player option for the 2027/28 season. His arrival will provide the Heat, who lost Norman Powell and Tyler Herro, with much-needed outside shooting ability, and he is expected to develop good chemistry with core players such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

As the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft, Thompson spent most of his professional career with the Golden State Warriors. He played 11 seasons for the Warriors, accumulating 793 regular season games, averaging 19.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 32.6 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 45.3% and a three-point percentage of 41.3%.

Thompson also played 158 games for the Warriors in the playoffs, averaging 19.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 36.9 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 43.6% and a three-point percentage of 40.5%. His most notable playoff achievement was winning four NBA championships with the Warriors (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022).

In July 2024, Thompson signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks. To date, he has played 141 regular season games for the Mavericks, averaging 12.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 24.6 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 40.3% and a three-point percentage of 38.7%.

Regarding Thompson's departure, Mavericks President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri said, "Klay is one of the greatest players and competitors of his generation, and we are very grateful for everything he has done for the Mavericks. We have great respect for Klay and all that he has achieved in his career, and we wish him all the best for the future."
