Former Bundesliga star Philipp Max announced his retirement at the age of 32.

Philippe Marks released a statement on Thursday confirming the end of his 12-year professional career. He had been unemployed since his early termination of his contract with Gamba Osaka in May.

“A chapter is coming to an end,” Max wrote on Instagram. “I am indeed very sad to leave behind the cause I have dedicated my life to. However, I quickly came to the conclusion that hanging up my boots now is the best option.”

The 32-year-old Max primarily plays as a left-back, but can also play as a left midfielder, left winger, and other positions. He developed through the youth academies of 1860 Munich, Bayern Munich, and Schalke 04, and made his first-team debut in the Bundesliga on March 25, 2014.

To date, Max has played for Schalke 04, Karlsruhe, Augsburg, PSV Eindhoven, Eintracht Frankfurt, Panathinaikos, and Gamba Osaka. During this time, he has made 403 appearances in all competitions, contributing 24 goals and 46 assists, and won one Dutch Cup and two Dutch Super Cups with PSV Eindhoven.

At the national team level, Max has only made three appearances for the German national team. He has not been called up to the German national team since April 2021.
