Reece James: Taking a positive step into the new season – I’m happy to be back on the court.

Chelsea beat Real Sociedad 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in a friendly match thanks to goals from Morgan Rodgers and João Pedro. Reece James said the team had taken an important step into the new season during this pre-season period and was happy to be back on the pitch.

With the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, 26-year-old Reece James will participate in the 2026 World Cup with the England national team, and help the "Three Lions" win the bronze medal.

In the friendly match against Real Sociedad, Reece James played for about 60 minutes and assisted João Pedro's goal.

Reflecting on the friendly match, Chelsea captain Reece James said, "The team played brilliantly, and I'm happy to be back on the pitch, with the new season starting in a week. The break was relatively short, and I felt good during the match. Although the conditions were tough and the weather was very hot, I felt great physically."

"It's still a relatively early stage, and my body and game feel are still a bit rusty, but this game is a good step."

Furthermore, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had previously mentioned the importance of Reece James' return. Reece James responded, "To hear these words from such an outstanding manager and legend means a great deal to me. It's very important to me, so I hope I can give my all for the manager and perform when the team needs me most."

“Some players have finished the preseason tour, during which they went through a lot of travel and played some games. But from what I’ve seen, everyone has integrated well into the team, and I’m very happy with this team.”

Reece James also said, "We've only been back with the team for four or five days so far, which is a very short time, but so far I've really enjoyed it, and so have my teammates."

On the other hand, Chelsea will embark on a new journey in the 2026/27 Premier League season, traveling to Fulham, managed by new manager Arbeloa.
